When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," said Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with great stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering the club's renowned youth academy.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to represent both nations at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they play in a official senior international match.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
