Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
