UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
