To the Checkout Assistant That Left Me Absolutely Speechless – Kudos to You

It was a Sunday morning, and I found myself sufficiently irritable, refueling my mum’s car. This was a typical gas station that doubles as a grocery store, meaning there's a chance of ending up in line shoppers with carts of somewhat expensive items. A terrible fate to unfold when all you want is to pay for some fuel. Dreadful.

My position was fourth among those waiting. Just one person serving, a youthful clerk. Something stood out to her presence. Once the slowpoke at the head of the line had completed payment for a cleaning product, his pastry, and his box of eggs, I was certain that I heard the cashier wish him to have a great day. Unusual. Could be I misunderstood, or possibly she uttered it and meant it ironically. I pondered if she could even be a supporter in my fight against faff, echoing my disdain for individuals slowing down straightforward customers including me.

Advancing next, becoming the third customer. The new leader of our line discharged her fuel-only transaction with notable efficiency. And there it was again: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” To be precise, it was “have a wonderful day”. A stateside native? In Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and few locals wishes anyone a wonderful day, or merely a pleasant day. Very rare. You don’t get US citizens knocking around Stourbridge, least of all holding jobs in fueling spots or other places.

Now I stood second. Following a senior shopper engaged in a protracted effort with her shopping cart, her groceries, her handbag and her loyalty card. The process dragged on. When she was done, the woman also got told a wonderful day. Clearly an American. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark in her direction, to check for that reaction their typical stare, unsmilingly, and say with absolute sincerity: “That is quite humorous.” However, nothing occurred of a funny comment to express.

Ultimately, I accepted the heartfelt tone – or a mimicry of sincerity, which amounts to the same thing – while she stared me right in the eye, deep into my soul, and wished me an awesome day. I felt better for it. It was a good thing.
