The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
