The Leading Record of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Place.

At first glance, Lux might appear closer to an arduous university quiz rather than the latest pop project by an artist whose last single was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Split across 4 different parts and voiced in 13 tongues, this is a dizzying symphonic work investigating female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, often through the lens of various female saints. The end of a relationship—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward on this record, supported by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself renders the work of other artists seem quite small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That Lux succeeds in escape overly academic chin-stroking feels nearly miraculous, with complete praise going to Rosalía. While this is not the first time album to alchemize the past with the present, the ambitions are much higher here, with the balancing act more pronounced. What truly elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core sense of joy. Much like the legendary artist during her peak, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she's tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless want to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines clearly during a stirring Italian song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration before a comically over-the-top string crescendo crashes in like cartoonish force. The song immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by racing strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic with Lux lies in the listener rarely exactly know—nor wish to predict—what it will go next."

Almost every song finishes in a completely different point than how it began. One moment examines the transient nature of fame with a featherlight symphony only to collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous rhythmic work begins out dark and sinister, with prowling beats, until sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Art and Pop

A key balancing act of Lux is straddling the line of radical experimentation and broad accessibility. This is little surprise that it has become the artist's first work to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. One track sung entirely in the English language swells on a chorus that seems to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals upward. That trick gets echoed on a different expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture impact of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a sharp edge, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album is pop on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its own built-in excess. This is an abundant source of hidden gems that requires patience to completely explore but never seem like a chore. While other big releases of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
