Taliban Employed Abandoned UK Technology to Locate Local Nationals That Served With Allied Troops, Inquiry Learns
An informant has revealed a parliamentary probe that the UK abandoned classified devices allowing the militant group to track down local individuals who worked with western forces.
Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk
The whistleblower, called Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the data leak were instructed to change residences and change their mobile numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.
MPs are investigating official handling of a catastrophic disclosure of personal details involving approximately 19k Afghans who had asked to relocate to the United Kingdom to escape militant rule.
Data Disclosure Occurred
An electronic document with private information, comprising names, addresses and in some cases relative details, was mistakenly released by an official working at special operations center in last year.
The leak came to light in late 2023, when the names of nine people who had sought to settle in Britain surfaced on online platforms.
Regime's Resources
“There seems to be a false assumption that the Taliban do not have the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” Person A informed the committee.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire a contact number, they are able to track your precise location. That is what the unit achieved.”
When questioned about if militant forces possessed necessary encryption, the whistleblower stated: “They have complete capability.”
Aftermath of the Security Lapse
Early investigations provided to the committee estimated that no fewer than forty-nine kin and co-workers of people concerned by the leak had been murdered.
A gag order about the leak was put in force in late 2023 and blocked any information concerning it from being made public until mid-2025.
Protective Actions
Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she was working with advised individuals at risk they were working with that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been intercepted”.
“We recommended that they relocate when possible and changed their contact details. Those were the primary information that, should militant forces obtained such data, would lead to their location being found,” she said.
Challenged Assessments
The source disputed that an official review carried out by a former official had been wrong to conclude that the obtaining of the dataset by the regime was “minimally impact current risk levels”.
“The important fact is that these Afghans are not standing up to the Taliban; they live secretly. All concerns relate to past work history.”
The source explained horrific violence endured by affected individuals, comprising electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.
“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get relatives to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
