The bodies of a 34-year-old woman and her young daughter, 10 have been located inside freezing appliances in an flat in western Austria.

The deceased, a woman from Syria and her child, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were detected on Friday. The freezers were hidden behind a drywall partition in the apartment, situated in the Innsbruck area.

A pair of males, a 55-year-old Austrian and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in the month of June. The 55-year-old, a colleague of the Syrian woman, stated to law enforcement last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but disputed intentional killing.

Addressing the media previously, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office announced the two suspects were being kept in custody on "strong suspicion of homicide".

The identities of those concerned have not been released by authorities, in accordance with national regulations.

The vanishing of the mother and child was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who resides in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Investigators revealed the male associate informed them at the time she had embarked on an long journey with her daughter to see her family in Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then noted as being active in foreign locations several times.

However when police searched the mother's apartment, her smartphone was discovered.

Someone also stated listening to a disturbing sound in the flat, and shouts of "mum" on the date the two were thought to have disappeared.

An expanded police investigation was initiated, with investigators discovering several texts transmitted via the victim's mobile—among them a job termination message to her company and texts to the male associate.

Authorities said a significant cash transfer was also sent to the suspect.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office told media representatives on recently that a storage unit had been leased before the mother and child went missing and a freezing appliance had been placed there.

The male siblings extracted the freezer from the unit on the very day the woman and her child disappeared, the official stated. And a week later, they obtained a second unit.

Investigators say they think this suggests the demise were premeditated.

"The cause of death was not identifiable due to the advanced decay of the victims," the official stated.

Mayr—representing the state—stated the precise timeline is not yet known, but the remains were expertly concealed and not discovered during a prior examination.

While the suspects were detained in the summer, it was not until November 12 that the 55-year-old admitted to an incident and to concealing the remains. He rejects any murderous intent, investigators stated.

Meanwhile, his brother confessed to a concealment but rejected knowledge of a killing.

The brothers are at this time in custody awaiting trial in detention centers in two Austrian cities, situated at a distance.

In a joint statement, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister stated the "reported homicide of mother and child... constitutes the sudden and brutal end of two human lives and uncovers a cruel system".

"Females of all ages are being murdered due to the simple reality that they are of the female gender," they added.

"Murders of women are a deeply rooted and society-wide problem that we must fight resolutely."
