Senegal's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back home,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and European Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
