The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, hesitated to declare he would live there right away after his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on our family's safety and the need to dedicating all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he added.

Political Debate

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a venue for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.

Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
