Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
