Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

New York police released video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He joined Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
