Israelis have come together around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader added on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an late session of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.

The official said the morning session concluded without significant progress, because of differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Essential Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid provision
  • After-conflict management of the area

Public Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere feels like home now and until all the hostages return not a single person will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

Near the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to show their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel reports 48 remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist one woman remarked: "We need do every compromise necessary for the captives to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately the majority of the population desire the war to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the music event, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and zone areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"Once the evening comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, particularly my youngest child who rests his head on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had received the remains of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area reported another two victims had been brought there. One of them was died by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the southern area, medics said.
