Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after the ex-president alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be taken into custody and penalized "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Message That Triggered the Dispute
The video footage, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in armed forces or defense capacities.
"As we did, you all made an pledge to defend and uphold this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the risks to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you must decline improper directives. No one has to follow directives that break the law or our national charter."
The Former President's Incensed Reaction
The video message reportedly prompt a furious response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he declared: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Answer
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a joint announcement censuring the comments.
"Political violence has no role in America," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our nation with great national pride and excellence. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky calls for execution against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged online messages and retract his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.
Lawmakers' Firm Reaction
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a statement.
"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who love this country and took an vow to safeguard and defend the national charter of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that sacred responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president considers it punishable by execution for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they execute their oath to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the ex-president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Further Governmental Comments
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and published on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He added: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and without qualification."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of the legislature advising troops to defy commands, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to parse the terminology and decide all that."
White House Statement
During a administration briefing on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official said. "You have sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the president's legal commands."
She said: "The integrity of our defense system relies on the hierarchy, and if that system is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
