California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, every region of the state is experiencing dryness. This milestone comes on the heels of difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified wildfire risks and pressured its massive agricultural sector.
A Map Reveals An Absence of Dryness
Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is clear of any level of drought. This shift resulted from weeks of heavy precipitation that helped fill major reservoirs like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their historic averages.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations
The journey here included powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, causing significant overflow, power outages, and tragic losses. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Even into late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were considered experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 eliminated those final dry conditions.
The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern
However, experts warn that being out of drought is not the same as complete water security. Latest data of the high-elevation snow place it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.
This frozen reservoir, which provides about a third of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for the year ahead. State experts point out that it is premature to make predictions for the annual water supply.
“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Although the monitor shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to sustaining this positive water situation for the rest of the year.
