Brian Eno Calls On Support to Send Palestinian Solidarity Song to UK Christmas No 1.
A campaign is aiming to launch a traditional song from Palestine to the top of the UK charts. The project hopes to deliver assistance to people in Gaza while also highlighting Palestinian culture and creativity.
A Possibility for Support and an "Chart Upset"
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who performs on the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a moment to show solidarity with Palestinians this festive season. He noted the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“It would be fantastic if that came to pass, yes,” he stated. “I won't be completely disheartened if it doesn’t, holiday tracks are a thing unto themselves.”
Powerful Theme of Self-Determination
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who features in the reimagining of a folk song called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's resilient spirit.
“It occupies a profound significance for countless listeners,” Barghouti said. “The message is that I would rather die in dignity than exist without freedom. That is the core idea of the song; we desire to exist a life of dignity that we deserve as Palestinians.”
Production History and Featured Artists
The track was produced following a major charity concert held in the autumn. First conceived to be performed and recorded live, the rendition was cut from the show due to scheduling overruns.
The notable list of performers contributing to Lullaby features a range of prominent voices from the industry. All were part of the benefit event, which reportedly raised a substantial amount for relief efforts.
Production and Release
Lullaby was crafted by a trio of producers and composers. The song features a mix of the original Arabic with contemporary English verses.
The organizers behind the initiative have emphasized that their goal is to collect the highest amount for a charitable pot. These donations will be distributed to initiatives supporting Palestinians through an non-profit partner.
“We haven't set a rigid aim,” a figure said. “We will pursue the maximum achievable. Of course, the more the merrier. It all goes out to Gaza.”
The reality in the region was noted for its profound destruction, with a vast majority of buildings described as levelled or seriously harmed.
“In that context, a handful of millions doesn’t make that much difference. But I think what does make a difference is first of all making this cause better known and demonstrating there’s another side to the story.”
The song is set to be released on Friday. Additionally, a video of the benefit event will be made accessible to view on a digital service from mid-December.
